Status of Mangroves in JNPT

The port has acquired about 2987 ha. Land for ports development in the year 1987-88. The land acquired was low laying and the port has developed the land as per the requirement. A major chunk of the available vacant land parcels within JNPT falls under mangrove areas.

Within the JNPT boundary, there are a significant number of Mangroves. These mangroves have grown in due course of time in the past decade. Mangroves are categorized as per their density. One is dense mangroves that are there for more than the past 2 decades and are of significant ecological importance. The other ones are sparse mangroves which came up later and have unfilled vacant land parcels in between them.

Right now including the land filing area, the total land available with JNPT is about 3402 hectares. In the year 2000, the total mangrove area within JNPT was about 406 hectares and the same grew to 885 hectares by 2014 and 913.6 hectares by 2016 due to a breach in the bund which was abutting the dense mangroves on the Nhava creekside.
